Figured I’d put together some “off-day” reading for ya – so let’s take a look Inside The Numbers on the Aeros current six-game winning streak, their longest since the 2010-2011 season.
- 1The number of 2nd period goals allowed by the Aeros.
- 2 The number of road wins by the Aeros.
- 3Game-winning goals by winger Jason Zucker.
- 4 Leads at the 2nd intermission during the streak.
- 5Number of times the Aeros have allowed two or fewer goals, all with Matt Hackett in net.
- 6The goal differential between the Aeros and their opponents. The club has scored 16 times and allowed 10 goals, winning each game by just one goal.
Make no bones about it, the Aeros coaches were not pleased with the team’s effort despite last night’s 2-1 overtime victory. Trust me, they’ll take the two points, but they know they won’t keep this streak intact with efforts like last night. The silver lining of last night’s win at the Cedar Park Center was the play of Hackett, who has won six in a row for the first time in his AHL career. He tied a season-high with his 35 saves last night, and that game never has a chance to even go to overtime if not for his superb play.
With that said, the Aeros have played some of their best hockey over the last few weeks. Head coach John Torchetti often talks about a “checking mentality” in regards to how his team must play. He stresses focus and details – all of which stem from the fundamentals of the game. Play hard, and play well in your defensive zone, and the offense will come. And that’s pretty much been the formula for the team during their six straight wins. They’ve played with the lead (a lot) and they seem to be comfortable in close games, which is a tough thing to accomplish when you have a young team. The penalty kill has been better as well, holding opponents to just four PPG during the winning streak. Couple that with some great goaltending from Hackett and some huge, timely goals (see: Zucker, Jason and Fontaine, Justin) and you’ve got the makings of a stretch that has seen the Aeros rise to a season-high, six games over .500.
The last time the Aeros won 7 in a row, you ask? Well, I’ll just make that a trivia question, rather than give you the answer. Shoot me a message via Twitter at @aero_joe – the first, correct response gets 4 club seats to the Aeros game on 12/16 vs. OKC.
Don’t forget to bring your dog to the game on Sunday against Peoria – proceeds benefit the Houston Humane Society.
I’m off to watch some of practice (it’s a late one, I know) and then enjoy another Saturday night off – weird that the Aeros have had 5 straight Saturdays off, especially since the team won’t experience that again until February 2nd.
